Planning a trip to Italy? You’re in the right place. I’m sharing everything I’ve learned from over 20 years of travelling to Italy and now living here full-time. As Canadian expats who made the leap to call Italy home, my partner Alex and I know this country from both perspectives—as wide-eyed tourists and as locals who navigate daily life here.
We’ve experienced Italy through every season, explored regions most tourists never see, and learned the difference between tourist traps and authentic experiences. Now we’re sharing those insights with you.

Embark on a delectable journey through Italy’s diverse culinary landscape, from hearty pasta dishes to exquisite gelato flavours. From learning to shop at local markets to understanding regional specialties that go far beyond pizza and pasta, we’ll show you how to eat like locals do.

Why trust our Italy travel guide?
- We live it every day: This isn’t advice from a quick vacation. We navigate Italian systems, shop at local markets, and participate in community life. Our recommendations come from genuine experience, not research.
- We remember being tourists: We haven’t forgotten the challenges of planning a trip through Italy or the excitement of discovering new places. We bridge the gap between tourists and locals.
- We explore beyond the obvious: Living here gives us time to discover hidden gems, seasonal experiences, and authentic local spots that most visitors never find.
- We understand both perspectives: We know what questions tourists ask because we asked them too. Now we can answer them with the wisdom that comes from actually living the answers.
The story of Amongst Romans
We assume you are here because you love Italy. Or maybe you’re looking for more information about Italy before planning your trip. You’re in the right spot!

We’ve been to Italy many times over the last 20 years. We’ve even lived there at different points in our lives. We decided to move here from Canada, and we now live in the historic town of Chieti in the region of Abruzzo in Italy.
As expats, we understand the excitement of planning a trip to Italy because we still feel that thrill. But we also know the secrets that come from daily life here, which bakery has the best cornetti, when to visit monuments without crowds, and how to experience authentic Italian culture beyond the tourist highlights.
